Making a Claim

If you have suffered a loss for which you are insured, please inform us as soon as possible the nature of your claim. If your claim involves a theft or burglary, the police must also be informed.

When making a claim you will be required to give information about the circumstances of the claim as well as reasonable evidence to justify the amount you are claiming. Below is a list of information you will need to provide when making your claim:

  • Your name.
  • The name of the person(s) insured under the policy if different from yours.
  • Your address or address of the insured.
  • The date of the loss or accident.
  • The location of the loss or accident.
  • Details: what happened? Where did it happen? When did it happen? Etc.
  • The police department you notified and the case file number (for vehicle accidents or theft losses).
  • Any third party information - someone who witnessed the accident (vehicle claims only).
  • Your policy number.

After a loss or damage there are some important steps you can take to ensure a smooth claims process.

  • Be sure to avoid further damage to any property by removing the property to another location if necessary or give the damaged property to the insurer.
  • Give the insurer immediate right of access and entry. E.g. emergency crews, contractors, appraisers.
  • Complete a record of damaged or destroyed property.
  • Supply receipts, invoices or books of account to demonstrate your loss.
  • Report any malicious acts, burglary or suspected thefts to the police, and provide the case number to the insurer.
  • Obtain quotes or estimates for replacement items or vehicle repairs.
  • Present replacement receipts or invoices for review and reimbursement.
  • If requested, sign and deliver a Proof of Loss form to complete your claim.
  • Return any property found that has been claimed. If the item has been replaced, you may negotiate with the insurer, depending on the condition of the items.

Most insurance claims are subject to a deductible - the initial amount of every claim that you have agreed to pay. Deductibles help make insurance more affordable for everyone by eliminating “nuisance” claims.
